Welcome To The Family

Welcome to our not-so-little family!  This is a chance for you to meet all of us and get to know a little something of who we are.  I try to keep this page updated, but sometimes the kids' names for themselves change from time to time, so it may not all flow smoothly if you read back for a ways, but everything modern and up to date will match with what we've got here.  So read on and get to know our happy, wild lot!

Fox (a.k.a. Mom/Mommy)

I'm Fox, the mama of the family, and also the one who maintains this fantastic blog!  But what makes me interesting as a person?  Is my only claim to fame being a homeschooling mom of four?  Not at all!  I'm also a belly dance instructor, a knitter, a writer (obviously), and a gamer.  Now and again I also bust out comic books, but I love reading in general.  Somehow I still manage to have time for it all.

Being a mom of four, much less one with homeschooled children, comes with its own certain skill set.  With four kids in the family it means a lot of schedules to juggle, even more when the neighbor's kids come over when we babysit.  Nine kids in the house?  I must be crazy!  I'm sure you can imagine that there's a certain level of coordination required to be able to keep everything running smoothly (though I do have lots of help!)  If nothing else I've learned to become more effective in managing time and making schedules, as well as keeping the calendar constantly updated, especially when there's lots of events we want to hit.  There's a lot to manage!

Pinkie

Pinkie is the oldest in the family, and the only girl.  She's also the only one that's not currently homeschooled.  Instead she goes to the local vocational school where she studies landscaping.  This is great for her because it means being outside and enjoying the weather, even when it's cold and snowing.

There are quite a few things Pinkie is passionate about, the biggest one being her art.  She draws on everything constantly, even herself sometimes.  Her artwork is unique and really fun, though she's starting to experiment with more traditional styles, like anime.

Not surprisingly, she's really into anime, having quite a few favorites that she watches over and over, in rotation with her favorite Disney shows and a handful of romantic comedies. She loves Supernatural as well, and playing video games.  Basically, if it's cute and sappy, or kind of creepy, she thinks it's pretty cool.

Link

Let me tell you, getting a picture of Link is a challenge!  He's not exactly a huge fan of the camera and doesn't love his picture taken all the time.  It means pictures of Link are a rare sight in deed!  However, we do get a few from time to time.

Link is a quirky one, but that's what makes him interesting.  Everything comes back to the things he's interested in, especially if it's something cool, like zombies or Pokemon.  He's super into Pokemon and loves pulling out his decks to battle with anyone willing to take him on.  This means we've got a lot of Pokemon going on in this house at all times!

One of the things Link is super interested in right now is technology and how it works.  Every time we're over with the neighbors and get to play with their Snap Circuits he gets super excited.  Any chance he gets he'll play with programming software.  I really think he's got a future in STEM.  It seems to be his calling.

On the Train to the Parade with Bear (and Ra-Ra the Tiger)

Creeper

Why Creeper?  Because Creepers are in Minecraft and they're green, which is his favorite color.  Can you tell he's a little obsessed with Minecraft?  I asked him what he wanted his name to be and he said Creeper, or Piggly, but Creeper got the vote.

Aside from Minecraft, Creeper particularly loves working with his hands.  If he can build it, he's happy.  He's always creating interesting inventions or buildings with LEGO blocks, and some day he wants to be able to build his own house, with help, but to physically work on it all his own.  I think he'd be great at it.

Creeper is perhaps the most easy going of the kids.  No matter what happens, he's ready to roll with it, unless it has to do with a lot of walking, then he's not a fan.  While he get easily bored, he's quick to entertain himself with building or drawing if you give him the opportunity, which means he's never bored for long.  He's also the perfect kid to have around when you're having a bad day because he's always right there and ready with a hug.

Bear

If ever there was going to be a kid that shows his personality from the moment you meet him, it's Bear!  Full of sass and energy, Bear seems to be able to go on endlessly, and all of that is a great cover for just how shy and sensitive he is.

Of all the kids, Bear's the one most interested in learning.  He wants to know everything about everything.  Most days he even gets pretty excited about doing school, though workbooks aren't his favorite.  More than anything he wants to learn how to read!

Aside from learning, Bear's got some definite favorites.  He's the most likely to sit down and watch some of his favorite YouTubers or even educational programming for kids.  He also loves to dance, which is good because he needs something to burn off all that energy, especially with the amount of time he spends sitting down with a book or watching one of his favorite shows.  However, when he grows up he wants to live in a house in the woods, with chickens, goats, and bees.

Nika

Not all of our family is human, and Nika is an important dog with an important job.  She's a service dog, and that means she goes with me just about everywhere.  But even when she's not working, she's really attached to the whole family.  It's not uncommon for her to follow the kids around to check up on them, or to lay down near them, even if there isn't the chance of them passing her a bite to eat.

Nika is a purebred GSD, conceived in Germany, but born and trained in the U.S.  She went through a full service dog training program in the western part of the state.  Unlike the other dogs at her program, who were all happy to go with whatever human took an interest in them, Nika was different.  She's a little more distant, which actually makes her perfect for our family.  She's happy to sit back and watch, or be near people but not attached to them.  But even with her respect of everyone's space, she's always happy for a good scritch or to have the kids give her hugs.  She seems especially pleased when the kids put a blanket over her, that way she can be cozy while she's napping.

Super Secret Ninja Skill: She doesn't have one!  Being a service dog is a superpower, not a ninja skill!

Chesh (a.k.a. Dad/Daddy)

While he doesn't get mentioned here much, Chesh is the dad of the family.  The nickname is actually short for the Cheshire Cat, due to his slightly annoying habit of saying something profound and helpful, or it would be if we could figure it out, and then disappearing.  Thankfully, unlike the cat in the story, he's not hard to find and question about it.  The name has really stuck, and the kids love it.

Chesh is the real video gamer in the house.  He's the one who introduced video games to the kids all those years back and really got them into gaming.  He's the reason the kids are into Minecraft, Pokemon, and superhero movies.  I can't imagine what we would all be doing if he weren't involved.  None of the kids would have any interests or hobbies!  Okay, at least none of the ones they have now.  He loves to take time out of his day to hang out with the kids and play games with them, any game, whether it's a board game, card game, or video game.  He's excited for the day they're all old enough for role playing as well!
